When family relationships break down the conflicts between former spouses, former partners, children and members of the wider family are more stressful than before. There is also an increasing likelihood of health related problems.

Those caught up in conflict have traditionally turned to solicitors to resolve their problems. This can lead to Court proceedings and result in a great deal of pain as well as costing huge sums of money. Mediators' backgrounds and training usually enable them to be supportive instead of conflictual.
A good mediator helps to reduce stress, not increase it.

The mediator, helps those involved in conflict to arrive at their own solutions in an environment that encourages parties to understand what each is going through.

Thus:

much of the pain that the parties experience can be alleviated

the financial cost to the parties is dramatically reduced; and

the huge delays often experienced in Court proceedings can be greatly reduced.

The most recent National Audit Report (March 2007) concluded that the mediation process takes on average about one quarter of the time taken by a case which goes through the Courts.
